Call for Proposals: Best of Biotech 2007 - the Life Science Business Plan Competition

If the latter, the Best of Biotech (BOB) 2007 competition could be your stepping-stone. "Best of Biotech - get your business started!" is an initiative of "Life Science Austria" (LISA), a program of the Austria Wirtschaftsservice (aws; Austrian Economic Services) and several public and private partners in Austria and abroad. The program Life Science Austria is run by aws on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economy and Labor, and aims at the commercialization of research results in the area of life sciences. You will find more information under The competition has been held three times, resulting in more than 24 newly established start-up companies.

BOB consists of two phases:

Phase 1: (December 3, 2007 to March 6, 2008) Participants will submit their business proposals, which they will develop into a fully-fledged business plan during Phase 2. The five most innovative ideas will be awarded a cash prize (€1,400 each) on March 6, 2008 in Vienna.

Phase 2: (March 6 to July 3, 2008) Workshops and boot camps will be organized in which participants learn the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and work together with experts on their business plan. Of course participants may also enter the contest directly in Phase 2. On June 27, 2008, participants present their completed plans to an international jury.

  • Applications in human and veterinary biotechnology ("red biotechnology")
  • Applications in plant biotechnology ("green biotechnology")
  • Applications in marine biotechnology ("blue biotechnology")
  • Projects in the area of industrial biotechnology ("white biotechnology"
  • Ideas in the field of medical devices
  • Ideas for innovative services in the area of life sciences (e.g., bioinformatics, new methods,"omics"-technologies, etc.)

The jury: Consisting of scientific experts, executives from the biotech industry, and venture capitalists, the jury will select the two best business plans. The gala closing festivity and award ceremony will take place on July 3, 2008 (first prize €15,000; second prize €10,000).

6. April 3-4, 2008: Boot Camp 1
7. May 30, 2008: Deadline Phase 2 - Submission business plans
8. June 26, 2008: Boot Camp 2 - Feedback on business plan presentations
9. June 27, 2008: Presentation of business plans to the jury
10. July 3, 2008: Gala and award ceremony.

Best of Biotech goals contribute to the development of a Central European life science region, which in the medium term will be strong enough to compete internationally. Students and scientists at universities and non-university research institutions, as well as all other creative individuals, are invited to participate. Since BOB also aims to improve cross-border collaboration between Austria, its neighbors, and countries from all parts of the world, everyone regardless of location is invited to take part in the competition.
