Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Composites Materials and Structures
In 2014 the US Department of Energy (DOE) launched a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for a Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Composites Materials and Structures. The Institute will target continuous or discontinuous, primarily carbon and glass fiber systems, with thermoset or thermoplastic resin materials. The funding can be as much as US$70 million, with approximately $14 million available for the first budget period. The vision of the institute is to revitalize American manufacturing and support domestic manufacturing competitiveness. The focus is going to be on producing low-cost, energy-efficient manufacturing of fiber-reinforced polymer composites. These types of composites are foundational technologies that are broadly applicable and pervasive in multiple industries and markets and have potentially transformational technical and economic impact.
Integrated Photonics Manufacturing Institute
On October 3, 2014 – US National Manufacturing Day – President Obama announced a new manufacturing innovation institute competition led by the Department of Defense (DOD). This will award more than US$100 million in federal investment to create an Integrated Photonics Manufacturing Institute. The Integrated Photonics Manufacturing Institute is the fourth DOD-led institute to be announced since the pilot project, focused on 3D printing, was launched in August 2012. The photonics establishment will study the use of light to capture and display images, convert energy, and detect, transmit, store, and process information. Integrated photonics has received recognition as an important innovation that simplifies optical system design, reduces the size of components and power use, and improves reliability. The project will have federal partners such as the Commerce and Energy departments, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the National Science Foundation.
