Riitta Mustonen has been the vice president for research at the Academy of Finland since 2007, with main responsibilities for science policy, research funding, and international cooperation.

Mustonen has been active on a number of committees and working groups at Nordic and European levels, e.g., the expert group of the Interim Evaluation of the EU 7th Framework Program. She is vice chair of the NordForsk Board and Finnish delegate to EMBC and Council of EMBL.  Since June 2011, she has also been chairing the Strategic Forum for International S&T Collaboration (SFIC) of the European Research Area Committee (ERAC).

Her scientific background is in genetic toxicology, radiation biology, and health effects of environmental hazards, in which Mustonen holds a Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki.
