Remembering Harald Posch – Austria’s Space Pioneer

The Office of Science and Technology Austria in Washington, DC, has noted with deep regret the passing of Harald Posch, Head of the Austrian Space Agency at FFG and Chair of the ESA Council, on Thursday, May 21, in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.

Harald Posch was the first Austrian to hold the positions of Industrial Policy Committee (IPC) Chair and, from 1 July 2014 onwards, Chair of the Council of the European Space Agency.

These milestones illustrate and underline Harald Posch’s commitment to Austrian space research. Since 2005, Harald Posch led Austria's Aeronautics and Space Agency, part of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG. In this function, he was instrumental in pushing Austria's engagement in space, a role that defined his career, when amongst others he helped set up the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) in Vienna, and served as Chair of its General Assembly since its inception in 2003.

We from OSTA Washington had the privilege to work with Harald on several occasions over the years. He has always been a tremendous source of knowledge and promoter of Austria’s cooperation with the United States in space research.

Most of all, Harald will be missed as a friend and colleague. Our thoughts are with his family.
