Study Released on Data Bias from Social Media

Austrian scientist Juergen Pfeffer, Assistant Research Professor at CMU, co-authored with McGill's Derek Ruths a commentary in the Nov 28 issue of the journal Science on "Social media for large studies of behavior". Thousands of research papers each year have been based on data gleaned from social media, a source of data that barely existed even five years ago. "Not everything that can be labeled as 'Big Data' is automatically great," Pfeffer says. One of the goals of this research was to raise awareness for the need to come up with new ways for scientists to manage and find ways of correcting for the bias inherent in the information gathered on social media such as Twitter.
