Trust Researchers Initiative

bridges vol. 26, July 2010 / Noteworthy Information

The "Trust Researchers" Initiative was launched in February 2010. Its Declaration summarizes its key messages regarding simplification of and a new philosophy for European Research funding.

The crucial points:

  • Funding of research in Europe should be based on mutual trust and responsible partnering
  • All actors for funding research throughout the different programs should share a consistent vision that avoids unnecessary technical and administrative details and instead promotes key funding principles based on an appropriate level of accountability
  • Funding principles should be effective, reliable, and stable
  • An appropriate level of tolerable risk is vital for success and should be supported by European research programs.

Trust Researchers signatures were handed over to Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science (left) by Sabine Herlitschka (right) and Olivier Küttel (center).

By May 2010, this bottom-up initiative had obtained more than 13,000 signatures of researchers from more than 43 countries. On June 8, 2010, the signatures of the "Trust Researchers" Initiative were handed over to Herbert Reul, chair of the Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee of the European Parliament, and to Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science.

As demonstrated by the European Commissions Communication on Simplification published April 29, 2010, the "Trust Researchers" Initiative proved to be effective in conveying its messages.

With the signatures handed over, the "Trust Researchers" Initiative closes its activities; however, it will keep its Web site online and will provide further information and updates on simplification of European research funding programs.
