What important facts should I know about the US?
One of the world's largest countries, the federal constitutional republic of the United States comprises one federal district and 50 states, 48 of which are contiguous states. Only Hawaii and Alaska are not adjacent to the other states. The capital is Washington, DC; the largest city, however, is New York City. With a total area of 9.8 million square kilometers (3.8 million square miles), the US is spread over six different time zones (UTC -5 to -10 during the winter time and UTC -4 to -10 during summertime). Due to a multi-ethnic population of more than 305 million, the US does not have an official language at the federal level. However, the vast majority of the people speak English, followed by Spanish. Various climatic zones are represented within the US because of the country's tremendous size and geographic variety. The currency is the United States dollar.
