    Kick-off event: "bridges Lecture Series"

    The very first lecture in the "bridges Lecture Series" was given by bridges columnist Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr., director of the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research and professor in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Colorado. Dr. Roger A. Pielke, Jr. presented his new book, The Honest Broker: Making Sense of Science in Policy and Politics (Cambridge University Press, 2007). The event was hosted by the Office of Science and Technology (OST) at the Embassy of Austria and was followed by a farewell reception for Dr. Philipp Steger, who had been Director of the OST and Austrian Science Attaché for seven years.     Panel Discussion: "Nuclear Power: Poised for a Renaissance"

    Gilbert Brown, Professor of nuclear engineering at the University of Massachusetts participated in a panel discussion on nuclear energy technology, co-organized by the Office of Science & Technology (OST) at the Embassy of Austria, and the DC Science Writers Association (DCSWA). The goal of this event was to educate DCSWA members on advanced nuclear energy reactors likely to be built in the US and abroad between 2010 and 2050, and explain how the technology differs from those built decades ago. The objective was to enhance attendees' ability to understand and evaluate public discourse on modern nuclear energy technology.

    Diplomatic Luncheon: "Bridging the Digital Divide, or How a Beehive fights Poverty"

    The OST co-hosted a luncheon at which diplomats from 27 nations came to hear how one organization works to bridge the digital divide in the United States and around the world. The lunch celebrated the efforts of the co-host for the event: One Economy Corporation is a national, non-profit organization that aids low-income households in gaining access to information through an online, multilingual-content Web site called the Beehive. Speakers included: Alec Ross, executive vice president, One Economy and Moustafa Mourad, president, One Global Economy. For further information about this event view the press release.
