How To Submit Article Ideas
bridges features a wide range of articles relating to science, technology, innovation and higher education policy in the US, Canada, and Europe. Currently, about 10,000 subscribers - policymakers, R&D managers, administrators, and scientists mainly in the EU and North America - read bridges.
The Office of Science & Technology (OST), part of the Austrian Embassy in Washington, DC, and publisher of this online magazine, takes considerable care to ensure that bridges articles are based on neutral, unbiased, and balanced research.
- Feature articles should provide readers with sufficient background information on which to build value-added analyses. Feature articles are limited to 2000 words.
- Expert contributions are feature articles on a specific topic, drawing on the expertise of a specialist. The language of the expert contribution should be understandable to the non-technical reader. Expert contributions are limited to 1500 words.
- OpEds and Commentaries are expressions of the guest author’s point of view on a given topic. While they must be based on fact, they should feature clear commentary on the issue. OpEds and commentaries are limited to 1000 words.
All contributions must be submitted in English. Authors are asked to write as concisely as possible, but not at the expense of clarity. The main title of the article should be short, up to 60 characters, and can be accompanied by a subtitle if further clarification is desired. A self-contained abstract of no more than 150 words summarizing the article and its conclusions, and listing 7-10 keywords (search terms that might be used by a potential reader), should precede the article. All contributions should be broken into paragraphs. The use of subheadings is encouraged if appropriate. Please save all text as a word document or RTF with as little formatting as possible.
Please cite all sources using web-links where possible. Please do not use footnotes. Bibliographic references should comprise: author’s name and initial, full title and subtitle, place of publication, publisher, date, and page references. References to journal articles must include the volume and number of the journal and range of pages. The layout should adhere to the following convention:

Inclusion of graphical material, photographs, and diagrams (jpeg or gif format) to illustrate the article is encouraged. Please include the copyright information to all graphical material.
Editing: All articles are edited by a professional copy-editor. In case major changes are suggested by the editor, articles will be returned to the authors for final review and clearance before being published.
Podcast: Selected articles are narrated by a professional voice-over and offered as sound files on our Web site. To ensure that your contribution is suitable for recording - and to increase the chances to be selected for this feature - clear and simple language and relatively short sentences are encouraged.
Author Index Information: is required from every guest author publishing in bridges. This will be available online in the author index of bridges. Please submit a CV and a digital picture (jpeg or giff).
