Professor of Economic Geography

Heike Mayer is Professor of Economic Geography at the University of Bern Switzerland and an Adjunct Professor in Urban Affairs and Planning at Virginia Tech's Alexandria Center. Her research interests are in regional economic development, high technology regions, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
She has worked on two projects. One examined the evolution of second-tier high-tech regions in the absence of world-class universities. The second project focused on female high-tech entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, Boston, Portland, and Washington DC. Her work has been published in the Journal of the American Planning Association, Economic Development Quarterly, Economic Development Journal, and by the Brookings Institution.
Mayer completed both her Master of Urban Studies and Ph.D. in Urban Studies at Portland State University.
